Great Blue Herons on the James River by Richmond

The James flows through Richmond bringing with it an abundance of fish and waterfowl.  It was fun to run along a catwalk that lies atop a pipeline that extends below a railroad track that runs along the river, and catch up with some herons fishing and a river snake sunbathing.

The walkway is just above water level. Across the river from the pipeline is a Great Blue Heron rookery, where dozens of herons nest and raise their chicks. I was lucky to get a close-up view of a beautiful heron fishing in the river and got a great set of pictures of the bird catching a large fish.

The pipeline helps keep the river clean by carrying waste water and runoff to a processing point downstream.
